NHCC Director, Cindy Farrington, was recently contacted by nationally acclaimed artist, Shawna Lewellen with an incredible offer. Shawna has been a very special friend of New Hope for many years. She had the idea to auction off a special art work as a fundraiser for the charity organization. Farrington explained it as “an example of God’s Sovereign Hand at work.” She tells the story of their first meeting: “Over 10 years ago, while preparing to begin a New Hope Seminar class, a teenage girl walked up to me and asked if I had ever thought of having our materials illustrated. The thought had crossed my mind once or twice, but I was sure that would be far too expensive. She then told me that she was going to art school to become an illustrator and asked if I would take a look at some drawings she had brought. She told me she had done some drawings and had felt like they were for a special purpose, but at the time, she really didn’t know what that might be. All of them had been drawn over a year before she had ever heard of New Hope. After starting a New Hope class and seeing our materials, Shawna knew in her heart the pictures had been created for specific chapters of this very book. It was almost time for the class to start, but I said I would love to see them. When she opened her portfolio and I saw the first drawing, my knees almost gave out. It was an indescribable God moment for me. As I went from drawing to drawing, I knew exactly where each and every one of them was supposed to go. There were 16 in all. She just handed them over to me as a gift. I knew it was an incredible and very special gift…but I didn’t know quite how incredible it really was. Fast forward now to the present. Those 16 drawings by any artist would have been quite expensive to have created for our books, but now, 10 years later, they have become a lot more valuable! You see, God chose that young woman to do something special for Him, and then He asked her to freely give it. But what none of us knew was just how much God was going to bless and repay her for it. That young woman, Shawna Lewellen, has now become a nationally acclaimed and highly successful artist.”
